Abstract

Creative not-knowing: On diagnosis, disorder-specific approaches and the claim of social criticism in the person-centred approach. On a closer look Rogers’ theories of personality and relationship and his counter-position to expert interventions prove themselves to constitute a harsh social criticism. Does his conception that “the essential conditions for psychotherapy exist in a single configuration” really imply a rejection of disorder differentiation and psychodiagnosis, as is often claimed? Furthermore, have the numerous conceptions of differentiation developed more recently actually taught us something new about psychotherapy? – From a dialogical-personalistic view therapists and clients are not only seen as being in relationships; as persons they are relationships, which makes them different in each therapeutic contact. It is the client who “in-forms” the therapist, i.e. “gives him shape or form” to understand, and challenges him to take the risk of co-creating a unique relationship. In short: It is always orthopractice that challenges orthodoxy.
