Abstract

Part I: The self as gestalt — a critical analysis and considerations for a further elaboration of the theory of self within the client-centered frame work. Client-centered theory of self is a psychotherapeutic concept that serves as a reflective tool in practice. In order to reconstruct the self-gestalt in psychotherapy as well as its incongruence in accordance with the client-centered concept, however, self-theory requires further elaboration. This paper (part I) presents the results of a critical analysis of self-theory undertaken in the course of an empirical study in order to develop a client’s self-gestalt on a phenomenal level. The analysis addresses inconsistencies of the theory concerning the development of the self in childhood, incongruence, and unconscious processes of the self.
