Abstract

The Influence of the Person-Centered Approach on a Modern Early Childhood Education. This article explores similarities between the central theoretical paradigm of modern, scientifically based Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) and the basic principles of the Person Centred Approach (PCA). After a short description of the current discourse in ECEC and PCA similarities are analyzed on the basis of four central principles: (1) the fundamental idea of the active, competent child fostering his/her own self-development, (2) the importance of the (professional) relationship, (3) the importance of the social environment, especially the parents, and (4) the concept of learning. The paper holds that the principles of the PCA can be found in the paradigm of ECEC theory and concepts — and that the PCA should be exposed clearer in scholarly educational debates.
