Abstract

Effectiveness of person-centered psychotherapy for children with anxiety disorders. This article describes the results of a naturalistic study investigating the effectiveness of person-centered psychotherapy with children suffering from an anxiety disorder. The study was scientifically coordinated by the Center for Childhood and Adolescence Research at the University of Applied Science in Freiburg / Germany. However there have been considerable developments with regard to the content of person-centered child and adolescent psychotherapy within the last 20 years, which have not yet been linked to research of the therapy itself and its effectiveness. The presented study aims to narrow this academic gap and to draw more attention again to person-centered psychotherapy for children in the discussion in the academic field.
Firstly, the study will be embedded into the academic discussion about psychotherapy. Since the study is of explicit naturalistic character with a combination design of process- and outcome evaluation, the empirical method will be highlighted in relation to the debates of the effectiveness of research in psychotherapy. The effectsize of ES = 1.22 refers to highly positive effects of person-centered psychotherapy for children with anxiety disorders.
