Abstract

Systems theory and the Person-Centered Approach: a critical discourse: This article attempts to accomplish a critical contribution for the discussion concerning the significance of systems theory for the Person-Centred Approach. The concepts of systems theory at the level of the philosophy of science model portray an important contribution, having replaced the linear-causal thinking by circular explanations and through the consideration of the interrelations which is a matter of substance particularly for the representation of psychotherapeutic phenomenona. On the other side, the model conceptions of systems theory can contribute little to the foundation of personality theory like the development of the self representing behavioral standards and value concepts and to the foundation of self experience and empathic understanding, since the concepts of systems theory deal with processes and structures and not with content and qualities of experience.
