Abstract

The intentions of Rogers' therapeutic statements — A Moscow study about psychotherapeutic intentions. The present study investigates which intentions can be identified in Rogers’ therapeutic statements and how they changed and developed over the course of his career. After a brief survey of previous studies (of Rogers’ documented interviews) we demonstrate how a system of 30 intentions (which are) relevant to psychotherapeutic discourse was defined using T. Ushakova’s ‘Intent-Analysis’ (Laboratory for Psychology of Language and Psycholinguistics of Russian Academy of Sciences). Multiple interview transcripts were analysed in relation to these intentions, including Rogers’ early therapy with Brian, his later interviews with Gloria and Jan, as well as further transcripts by psychotherapists of other orientations. The results of this study suggest, in particular, the increasing importance of the three most common intentions — assist with self-exploration’, ‘unconditional acceptance’, and ‘self-disclosure of the therapist’.
