Abstract

Person-centered counseling of the elderly and their family members. This paper examines person-centered counseling with regard to counseling the elderly and their family members. Concepts that are relevant for counseling of the elderly and people with dementia, such as holistic or integrated counseling and biographical documentation, will be presented and illustrated using real life examples. This paper will show that the person-centered approach is particularly well-suited to aiding the decisionmaking processes of the elderly people, because the emotions and the personal context of the client are essential. In addition, we will discuss the framework conditions of the decisionmaking process that are often not consciously perceived in order to illustrate that counseling often does not take place in a power-free vacuum. One of the areas of responsibility of person-centered counseling is to reflect on the inherent breakdown of actions compared to institutional guidelines and to respond based on the person instead of the norm.
