Abstract
Do journalists frequently change into professional politics because communicative competence is a precondition for content production as well as for politics? Is the omnipresence of media, increasingly disputed since the age of digitisation, the reason for recruiting journalists into the ranks of politics? – Our survey concerning the Austrian situation suggests a different view: Ties between journalism and politics were historically much stronger then today. Nevertheless the occupational change of wellknown journalists into politics from the 1990s onward has helped mostly the creation of short-term attention for political parties. It had hardly to do with media professionalism. Some examples even show negative aspects for political careers caused by journalistic role behaviour.
