Abstract

Resources of the person-centered approach for drug therapy. With reference to changing treatment paradigms in the field of drug therapy we discuss why the Person-Centered Approach deserves more attention in the psychotherapeutic treatment of substance-using individuals. Essential aspects are (1) the inherently strong orientation to the individual client and his/her frame of reference and his/her system of values (2) the therapist’s enduring attitude of unconditional positive regard, which counteracts resigned failure self-image and provides support in times of crisis (3) the non-invasive therapy frame, which facilitates integration of denied contents (4) the encouragement of autonomous self dependent way of living that is not externally imposed by rules but rather is based on self-exploration and client’s solutions and finally (5) the discussion about significant here-and-now questions that are driven by the client him-/herself.
