Abstract

This paper discusses the adequate translation of two administrative units of the Czech Republic both with respect to the historical development and current situation in the country. The purpose of this study is to present a challenging translation problem originating from a law system that has been culturally affiliated to one national variant of the pluricentric German language but exists in a vicinity of another centre thereof. The formation of the discussed administrative units of kraj and okres is briefly introduced, where both bear functional similarities with the administrative system of Austria-Hungary. Subsequently, their functional characteristics as of today are presented together with three predominant methods of translation, each of which is critically analysed. Lastly, there is a discussion of relevant theoretical frameworks (transcultural concept comparison, terminological microanalysis as well as equivalence) and grounds they deliver for grasping this rather rare phenomenon. The analysis aims to spark a discussion among professionals concerning translation problems and unifying tendencies in the domain of administrative law, which may be of interest above all for court translators
