Abstract

The Encounter Phenomenon in Psychotherapy. In this study a qualitative analysis was used to process interviews with seven psychotherapists of different theoretical approaches on the topic of “encounter phenomenon in psychotherapy”. This study enabled a closer look on these very subjective and subtle moments in therapeutic process. An evident consensus was reached in therapists’ description of the phenomenon; its most important characteristics showed to be: a unique closeness and understanding of the other, emphasis on experiencing at the expense of cognitive aspects, high intensity and short duration of the experience, a potential for therapeutic change, and motivation for further therapeutic work. Implications of encounter experience for therapeutic process are discussed at the end of this article.
