Abstract
One method for all cases: Differiential strategies in person-centred psychotherapy: Clarifications and problems. This article
offers a critical exploration of differentiated strategies in client-centred therapy. Central propositions are: (a) Differentiated concepts are more of an adaptation to a number of practical conditions and a result of an increasing multiplicity of applications, clients and therapists than a further development or refinement of client-centred therapy. (b) Differentiated strategies can serve to compensate for limitations in therapeutic competence and to encourage a promise of success even in the case where there is insufficient implementation of client-centred core conditions. (c) Therapists self-selection is a differentiated strategy for the successful practice of the profession of psychotherapy. It requires a ‘privileged position’ for the practitioner: namely, the freedom to live a psychologically healthy life, the maintenance of an economically viable situation with a flexible income, the ‘recruitment’ and attraction of suitable clients (best fit strategies) and a secure position within a network of cooperative professional colleagues.
