Abstract
Adolescents in Person-centered Psychotherapy. In this article I relect on the psychotherapeutic practice with adolescents based on the concept of client-centred psychotherapy. First the mental development of the adolescent is described. Adolescence with its dynamic development takes a high risk for crisis. The separation of children and parents from one another is a challenge for both. Young people can shift into a crisis if their coping strategies do no longer work. It is often dificult to evaluate the signiicance of the crisis within the whole mental development.
The person-centred relationship is most suitable for psychotherapy with adolescents. Empathy for their conlicting experiences is very important for the development of their concept of self. The level-of-abstraction concept as coined by Höger helps to explain the manifest behaviour of therapists in the person-centred relationship.
