Being seen in play: play as a sign of the actualizing tendency in everyday life and in all ages. Play is an impulsive expression of the actualizing tendency in everyday life. In play, a person of any age can undergo meaningful experiences attuned to the actualizing tendency. This can allow an individual’s sense of self to become more flexible. At the same time he or she can feel safe and connected; the polyvagal theory claims this experience to be especially meaningful.
