Abstract

Practicing focusing in a partnership in coping with chronic illness … This article is based upon a qualitative investigation, that has been carried out at Freie Universität Berlin and published by Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Berlin. This is the contribution of the study: On a sample of eight experts the usefulness of practicing focusing in a partnership in coping with chronic illness has been explored, using the strategy of the narrative interview by Schütze (1983). The actual aim of the study was to explain data-based this selfhelp-methods mode of functioning. Evidence such as stress-reduction, changes in the subjective perception of the chronic physical illness as well as the improvement or healing of chronic physical symptoms shows, that practicing focusing in a partnership on a regular basis helps the interviewed persons to cope with their chronic disease. Based on the results a theory has been developed: The individual strategy someone uses while focusing as well as experiencing autonomy and self-reliance in the focusing-process both play an important role in coping with a chronic disease by means of this method.
