Abstract
About one in 2,000 children in Austria is diagnosed as intersex at birth, while others learn about it later in life – or not at all. In order to be able to quickly assign these infants legally to a clearly male or female gender, gender-assignment surgeries are performed. The extent to which there is a danger that the medically prefabricated life plans for inter* persons prevent a healthy development of personality and cause physical and psychological suffering will be clarified by drawing on developmental psychology and person-centered theory. Finally, this article will explain what therapists working in a person-centered way should pay special attention to when working with intersex people.
