Abstract

“Sailing under false colours”? About the situation of person-centered psychotherapy in Germany in the framework of the
health insurance system. In Germany person-centred therapists are not allowed to practise person-centred psychotherapy explicitly in the framework of the health insurance system. In this article the author sketches the formal and legal conditions of therapeutic work for a set-up psychotherapist within the framework of the German health insurance system. From her personal point of view she describes the consequences of this situation to her therapeutic identity as a person-centred therapist. Furthermore she reflects how the person-centred approach essentially influences the concrete therapeutic work of person-centred therapists even within the restrictions laid out by the health insurance system for outpatient psychotherapy in Germany. On a high level of abstraction the person-centred approach has worked out the basic principles of creating the relationship between therapist and client, which will lead to progress in personal development and growth. The author illustrates the realization of these principles within the framework of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
