Abstract

Person-centered science: What we know and how we can learn more about Person-Centered/Experiential Psychotherapies. There is a central tension between the political necessity of positivist quantitative research for supporting the legitimacy of Person-Centered/Experiential Psychotherapies (PCEPs) and the natural resonance between qualitative research approaches and PCEPs. The major, politically useful indings of quantitative outcome research and process-outcome research on PCEPs are reviewed, along with some emerging indings from more recent qualitative research on these therapies. The existing research is helpful for justifying and understanding our therapies, but much more is needed, from both quantitative and qualitative research traditions. The latter part of the paper describes recommendations, principles, research genres and recommendations for expanding the amount and range of research on PCEPs.
