Abstract

This paper briefly reviews the history of training in the person-centered approach (PCA) in the USA. It traces Rogers’ early programs and the current state of how the approach is presented today. Person-centered training today is largely relegated to its influence on generic or eclectic approaches or to peripheral non-profit organizations and associations. Although a majority value person-centered conditions as important or necessary, few academic programs or academics identify themselves as person-centered or assert that the conditions are sufficient or optimal. Paths to licensure in human services, professional counseling, social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, and psychiatry and sample programs with person-centered identifications are mentioned.
