Abstract

Person-centered conversations in the professional formation in nursing of elderly people. As well as working face-to-face with
elderly people, psychologists may also be indirectly involved with the elderly as supervisors and providers of training to geriatric nurses. Vocational training and supervision programs are designed to enable geriatric nurses to develop their overall competence in increasing elderly patients’ well-being and respecting their right to self-direction. However, according to surveys in various types of residential homes, these aims are rarely achieved. As a result, nurses themselves tend to be frustrated when their care efforts fail to take effect. It was found that person-centered communication can be helpful in many everyday care situations with elderly people, by supporting them emotionally and respecting their right to self-direction. At the same time, it can alleviate the burden of caregiving and increase nurses job satisfaction.
