Abstract

Person-Centered Therapy in post-communist Romania. This article provides some personal experiences during the communist regime, regarding also the atmosphere during that period and how it is related with our personal and professional development as person-centered psychotherapists in a post-communist country. We describe how person-centered psychotherapy was introduced and developed in Romania in a social, political and psychological context, with particular conditions of worth of the society that were built during a long communist regime and influenced the development of the self and values of Romanian people. The implementation of PCP was a challenge because PCP proposes a therapist who offers a relationship of equality thereby opposing the background of collective imaginary that the therapist is an expert who offers solutions for various problems, like it is presumed in the medical model.
