Abstract

Trauma-sensitive professional support related to diagnosis of cancer. An integrative approach. After describing specific facettes of a person-centered relationship in professional psychooncological support, the symptoms of shock, which are in most cases related to a cancer diagnosis and which are often similar to the symptoms of an acute posttraumatic stress disorder, as well as their neurophysiological background are described. Following this, the trauma specifics and the trauma potential of a cancer diagnosis are elaborated on. Elements of trauma sensitive diagnostics are introduced as well as trauma focused measures for acute
relief, which counteract potential traumatization. It is the goal of the present article to provide a framework for understanding the partially severe reactions following a cancer diagnosis by providing trauma-specific knowledge. Options are provided with which to prevent the development of a posttraumatic stress disorder and the accompanying risk of relapse so that the cancer diagnosis can be experienced as a challenging rather than an excessively demanding event.
