Abstract
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Therapeutic guidelines for person-centered psychotherapy with children, adolescents and related persons. This article presents guidelines for person-centered psychotherapy with children and adolescents with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, their families and related persons.
The disorder is explained by a bio-psycho-social model. Taking into account scientific findings and practice experience the PCA based therapy concept aims at building up the child’s self-structure from inside and not – as in previous concepts – by structuring it from outside.
In this context it is of great significance that the therapist develops a high affinity for the child’s inner structure and its particular perception of the world. Based on the person- centered attitude the therapist’s presence, a close empathic attuning, the stimulation of symbolizing processes as well as the activation of the child’s resources are essential to bring about the development of new intra-psychic structures.
The therapeutic guidelines specify this innovative concept. They make concrete suggestions referring to the different stages of the therapeutic process for the therapy of the ADHD-child/adolescent as well as for the cooperation with his family and other persons related to the client.
