Abstract

Finding words for our experiences — our dreams. On translating the language of dreams and understanding yourself. This article offers an approach for understanding dreams with the following hypothesis: Dreams are essentially important to the finding of words for experiences and for the understanding of what we have experienced. The actual — even literal — translation of dreams into verbal language is the key for understanding. The author developed this approach while she wrote as a counsellor for a magazine for more than two decades and in her own psychotherapeutic practice: the alphabet of images of our dreams. The core
concept is the process of verbalizing the dream on the various levels of abstraction. The theory of the Personcentred Approach (PCA) is linked to results of neuroscientific research on dreams as well as evolutionary psychological thoughts on the development of language. Two examples illustrate the approach.
