Abstract
Recently, various initiatives in communication and media studies have advocated a shift in research culture towards open science practices and better access to research infrastructures and resources, such as archives, databases, datasets or research software. For this change, new publication formats are needed that make it possible to exchange information on and experiences with such infrastructures and resources in a structured form. So far, however, the central forums of German-language and international communication and media research have hardly met this need. Against this background, the journal Publizistik recently decided to create a separate section for infrastructures and resources relevant to the field. The authors of this article have edited a special issue on "Data, archives, and tools" to mark the beginning of this section. The special issue collects exemplary contributions on how this section can be filled with content and formally designed in the future. This article provides insights from "behind the scenes" of the creation of the special issue and discusses the experiences in dealing with the challenges of writing, reviewing and editing these new publication formats to inform colleagues who are planning to establish similar formats in other journals or to write articles for them.
